Welcome to the delicate work of animal artist Trista Campbell. Her intent is to exhibit art that will inspire others who appreciate animals and connect herself and those interested in her artistic vision. Enjoy looking through her domestic and wildlife scratchboards galleries. If you are looking at getting a scratchboard to commemorate a loved pet please check out the commission page for more information.

What is Trista working on now?

I am currently working on three different scratchboards. One is a Eurasian lynx named Sydney. He was a sweet boy who recently passed away at The Wildcat Sanctuary. This board will be displayed at the Sanctuary as a memorial and a tribute for all those wild felines in need of help.

The second board is of a beautiful long haired domestic cat and the third board is a super cute Italian greyhound.  Check back for progress photos of these latest boards! Check out the the greyhound, “Sooner”  below!!!

Here are a couple of my latest works, which were auctioned off at The Wildcat Sanctuary’s annual fundraiser Jungle Boogie:

Langley is a cougar resident of The Wildcat Sanctuary. Board size is 5" x 7".

Sabrina is a resident tiger of The Wildcat Sanctuary. Board size is 8" x 10". This particular piece was one of my favorites to work on. It was hard to let go of, but hopefully it will help spread the word about Sabrina and her captivating story. I took the reference photo for this piece the same night Sabrina had chuffed and rubbed on the fence for the first time when I was working with her. This was such a touching moment as this beautiful girl has had such a hard past and trust doesn't come easy for her. I felt so honored to be there during that moment and etching a scratchboard is the best way for me to always remember it :) . Please go to WildcatSanctuary.org for more information on Sabrina and her journey of trust.

What’s New

My first Munny doll (“Trikky”) was such a blast to create! To make the doll look like a snow leopard I had added some sculptey clay. The finished work was titled “Feelin’ Cloudy” .

Scratchboard Process

The first step is to lightly draw the animal onto the black board using a white charcoal stick.  This outline will act as a guideline for all of the individual scratches.

The board is then scratched from one side to the next. She prefers to work square inch by square inch to ensure that the proportions match those found in the photo reference.  During this time she also adds the meticulously detail to bring the piece to life.

Once the fur or feathers are completed she will work on the eyes, nose and mouth of the animal.  This is when the piece really evolves and begins to show the subject’s personality.

Lastly she goes through the entire piece adding any additional highlights, reflections in the eyes, whiskers and any other finishing details that pull the piece together.
